Wu-ch'ang is reported still to be holding

out, but Marshal Wu P'ei-fu has retreated to Cheng-chou ()), just south of the Yellow River in Honan province, at the point where the Peking-Hankow railway is crossed by the railway running eastwards to the Tientsin-P'ukow railway. It is further reported that the southerners have occupied Sin-yang (11) in Honan and thus hold the whole of the railways in Hupeh, and further that General Fan Chung-sin and his "red spears", as to whom please see the 4th paragraph of my secret despatch of the 15th August, has been incorporated in the southern army.

According to information from Colonel Hayley-Bell, General Chau Ting-yam, the tupan of Fukien, held on the 17th September a military conference, at which it was resolved to commence a general attack on Kuang-tung on the 19th September. General Chau's troops concentrated at Cheung-chau (H) and Teng-chau ( J }] } total about 7,000 men. His opponent, General Ho Ying-yam, in command at Swatow, is reported to be ready to move his troops to attack Fukien before the northerners invade Kuang-tung, and he has been reinforced by one regiment of the Whampoa Cadet Force.
